SYNOPSIS The images you are watching were shot by Domenico Notarangelo, who was for several years correspondent for the communist newspaper “L’Unità”, political leader and local governor for the Italian Communist Party (PCI) in Lucania. He has collected and documented over time, by means of photographs and films, the life, the customs and popular traditions of Southern Italy villages. This is what he witnessed.
1969-1972. Accettura, a few kilometres from Matera. Whitsunday. A big Turkey oak, cut down on Ascension Day, is tied to yokes of oxen and dragged out of a wood. In another wood, a holly is cut down and carried by peasants on their backs. In the evening, these trees meet in the village. The following Tuesday, the treetop, the “Cima”, is grafted onto the Turkey oak, the “Maggio”: it’s the marriage of trees, to generate fertility. The tree is now ready to be set up in the square. Meanwhile, the procession of the patron saint, San Giuliano, makes its way along the village streets, preceded by a group of women who carry votive constructions on their heads. Once the procession has reached the square, the tree is set up. At sunset, the bravest climber, Zizilone, climbs up and reaches the treetop, while the crowd watches on in wonder.

SINOSSI Le immagini che vediamo sono state riprese da Domenico Notarangelo, per diversi anni corrispondente del quotidiano comunista “L’Unità”, dirigente politico e amministratore locale del PCI in Lucania, il quale ha raccolto e documentato nel tempo, con fotografie e filmati, la vita, i costumi e le tradizioni popolari dei paesi del sud Italia. Questo è ciò che ha visto.
1969-1972. Accettura, pochi chilometri da Matera. Domenica di Pentecoste. Un grande cerro, abbattuto il giovedì dell’Ascensione, viene trascinato da un bosco fuori paese legato a coppie di buoi. In un altro bosco, un agrifoglio viene tagliato e trasportato a spalla dai contadini. La sera in paese gli alberi si incontrano. Il martedì successivo la “Cima” viene innestata sul “Maggio”: è il matrimonio degli alberi propiziatore di fertilità. L’albero ora è pronto per essere innalzato in piazza. Intanto è partita per le strade del paese la processione del santo protettore, San Giuliano, preceduta da un gruppo di donne che portano sul capo delle costruzioni votive. Quando la processione giunge in piazza, l’albero viene innalzato. Al tramonto, lo scalatore più coraggioso, Zizilone, si arrampica e raggiunge la cima dell’albero, tra lo stupore di tutti.
NOTE DI REGIA I contadini. La loro festa. Culti pagani e sacralità cristiana. Natura madre benigna. L’ebbrezza del rito. Vecchi e bambini. I volti delle donne. Ogni volto un paesaggio. Il corpo degli uomini. La terra degli uomini. Le storie fuori dalla Storia. La fine del mondo. Viaggio all’inizio del mondo.
